FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - America’s pastime overlapped America’s Birthday this weekend as American Legion’s Fairbanks 49ers and Alaska Wild welcomed teams from Southcentral, Alaska for three games apiece.

Fairbanks 49ers

The 49ers exploded for 16 runs to open the weekend, which was more than enough for the six-run win over East Anchorage Friday. Most of the damage was done in the bottom of the third inning when Fairbanks was in a 4-0 hole. A Chris Luskleet triple sparked an 11-run inning, with Aden Sadler, Shaun Conwell, Miles Fowler, Tyler Moore and Caden Davis following with RBI’s in the frame that featured 15 plate appearances.

Luskleet and Conwell each had three hits and three RBI’s, while Davis got the win on the mound with four strikeouts and two earned runs over five innings.

Running it back Saturday, it was more of the same, as 15 Fairbanks hits and five East Anchorage errors resulted in a 13-3 victory for the 49ers in a five inning contest. Luskleet had another 3-RBI performances, while Sadler, Conwell, Moore, Fowler and Aaron Conwell each produced multiple hits in victory.

Olav Moeller allowed just one hit and struck out three batters in 3.2 innings of work in the win on the bump.

In their second game of the day, the 49ers were pinned against the Chugiak Mustangs. Despite outhitting the visitors, Fairbanks fell 7-2 in the weekend finale with the Mustangs putting up two runs in each the 5th, 6th and 7th innings. Teagan Emerson collected three hits, while Sadler roped a triple in the loss.

Fairbanks is now 8-7 overall and 6-5 in National Division League play, good for second place in the eight team division. They will head to the Mat-Su Valley this weekend to compete in the Todd Ryan Tournament.

Alaska Wild

A four-run opening inning and a four-run fifth inning was too much for the Wild to overcome Friday, falling 11-4 to Chugiak. Ethan Frollo went 3 for 3 at the plate, while Ethan Clifford, Bradyen Grorud and Noah Perkins each drove in a run in the loss.

The Wild would bounce back in a big way Saturday, producing 15 hits in a 17-4 trouncing over East Anchorage in five innings. Every single batter, 1-9, got a hit, while Gavin Fischer went 3 for 5 with 5 RBI’s in victory. Grorud hit an inside-the-park home run, while Clifford drove in three runs at the plate.

Logan Fischer, who also hit a triple and stole a base, went all five innings, allowing six hits while striking out nine batters.

Looking for revenge against Chugiak on Independence Day, the Wild got more than that in 20-6 steamroll over the Mustangs. Clifford generated four of the team’s 13 hits in victory, while they took advantage of 11 walks to circle the bases 20 times in five innings. The game got out of hand quickly when Alaska poured on 12 first inning runs. Alex Garcia and Gavin Fischer each added three RBI’s while Connor Lanser went all five innings in the win on the mound.

The Wild (7-8 overall, 4-6 league) will also compete at the Todd Ryan Tournament this weekend, featuring the Palmer Moose, Wasilla Warriors and Fairbanks 49ers.
