FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) -A long-standing tradition for the Fairbanks community since 1952 is Golden Days week.

Jinnel Choiniere, President and CEO of the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce told usm “Golden Days celebrates the founding of Fairbanks, the discovery of gold in the Fairbanks area. So every year we like to celebrate that. People dress up in period costumes, we have gold themed events, and the theme of the event every year is gold related.”

This year the Golden Days celebration aligned with the anniversary of the discovery of gold in Fairbanks on July 22nd. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, some Golden Days events have been modified, such as the “Grand Reverse Parade” in which the audience will drive by floats and classic cars at the Tanana Valley State Fairgrounds.

Choiniere explained, “We did hold Golden Days last year, [but] it definitely was in a slightly different form than we’re used to seeing it. A lot of the events looked kind of different. So this year we’re still in transition basically, somewhere between the pandemic year and getting back to what people would consider a traditional Golden Days experience,” said .

Other Golden Days events this year include the downtown Fairbanks street fair running from 12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, and the traditional rubber ducky race taking place at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday starting at the Wendell avenue bridge.

“We’re just excited to be able to offer Golden Days again this year. We didn’t have a gap, we were able to provide something last year. This year we’re gonna have a lot of the events that we normally look forward to. We’re excited to be able to offer something this summer, get people out enjoying the beautiful Fairbanks weather,” Choiniere said.
