Fairbanks North Star Borough holds 2021 Summer Trails Challenge
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks North Star Borough’s (FNSB) 2021 Summer Trails Challenge is in full swing, giving locals a chance to stay active and explore the community.
According to Bryant Wright with FNSB Parks and Recreation, “You’re really challenging yourself, and you’re challenging your friends and family to get out there and find as many trails as you can.”
The challenge has been run since winter 2016. Wright explained, “There are tons and tons of trails out there, tons of great trails, and we wanted to come up with some way to encourage people to get out, so we thought maybe we’ll challenge them to get out,”
20 of these trails are used for the challenge, according to Wright. “We started a lot smaller, and people wanted more and more, so we bumped it up.”
Trail difficulty varies, so Wright encourages participants to check the weather before starting. “Some of the trails are really pretty easy, really short, and you don’t have to think as much about it. Some of them are out there, they’re going to take you all day - I mean all day. Some of them are really better suited for, like, an ATV ride. They’re really long.”
Those wishing to participate first need to register online. According to Wright, “It’s all ages, all abilities, totally free. We just want people to register so we can get in touch with them and let them know if there’s an issue on a trail or if we change a trail or something.”
Then they can traverse the trails at their own pace, and take a selfie in front of a special sign set along each trail.
After finding 10 signs, Wright says hikers can enter to receive prizes. “This last year, we had some bandanas made. These are pretty fun. Last summer we had some buffs made. Everyone likes buffs, so we do a different design each year.
There are also Junior and Sourdough categories, for those under age 10 or over age 60, respectively. These categories only require 5 pictures.
It is recommended that if taking a longer trail, you tell someone where you are going and bring appropriate gear and supplies.
The challenge runs until September 30th. More information can be found here.
