FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Hunter Elementary School is once again opening for classes starting Wednesday, August 18th.

After heavy snowfall in April, a portion of the school building’s roof partially collapsed.

Students were transplanted to schools around the district for the remainder of the school year. Crews then worked to restore structural stability to the building.

Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor Bryce Ward said, “We were under construction throughout the summer to secure that part of the building, and we’ve just recently received the Certificate of Occupancy from the City of Fairbanks.

According to Ward, “Classes will be able to return to the school. That portion of the building is still going to be going under renovations so there’s going to be contractors working on that portion of the building, but the rest of the school is now open.”

“Things are looking good. We’re ready for another school year,” he said.
