FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks North Star Borough has started a new podcast.

Featuring interviews with members of the community, the program explores the history and culture of the Interior.

“We’re trying to get stories, to find out more about our community, and share those with our residents and guests,” The Alaskaland Podcast host, borough Mayor Bryce Ward, said. “I learn something new with every conversation we have, a little aspect of our community that I had no idea about.”

According to the mayor, the idea for the podcast came about while researching community identity and the origin story of Fairbanks. “Our town is full of amazing stories and amazing people, and so we thought, ‘Well, you know, it’d be neat to share this with the community.’”

Ward thought taking the format of a podcast would meet the needs of a modern audience.

The plan is to release an episode every two weeks. “We’ve talked to a variety of different folks in Fairbanks, and we’ve got more on the list.”

The mission is to discuss the past, present, and future of the community, according to Ward. “We’ve focused really heavily on some of the past aspects of Fairbanks, so some of the historical aspects of Fairbanks. The first few episodes are actually shot at Pioneer Park.”

Several interviews have been filmed already. The first episode is already on the borough’s website and YouTube page, and features an interview with Donnie Hayes, Pioneer Park Manager. “There’s no script. Everything is kind of just very organic. It goes where it goes, and it’s really laid back and low-key,” Ward said.

Episodes run 15 to 20 minutes long, and there’s no end of topics to be covered.

The podcast also incorporates the “Fairbanks North Star Borough” song, written by Ravonna Martin.
