Rain brings potholes to Fairbanks roads: DOT asks residents to report them

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The recent rain across the Interior is starting to cause problems on area roadways in Fairbanks. Potholes are a common site in many areas, and according to the Department of Transportation (DOT), that’s because the dirt underneath is getting washed away.

Caitlin Frye is the Northern Region Information Officer for the Alaska DOT and said drivers should be aware of puddles and drive through them carefully since they often contain hidden holes that can cause damage to a vehicle.

She also encouraged drivers to be on the lookout for potholes. If people do see a pothole, she asks that they contact the DOT. She said that crews keep busy during the rainy season and can fill between 20 to 50 potholes a day.

“We really appreciate reports from the public letting us know that there’s potholes on the roads. Your eyes on the road help us figure out what needs to be fixed. If you do see road damage or potholes on the road you can email, DOT.potholes@alaksa.gov and we’ll pass your messages on to the right maintenance station,” Frye said.
