Monroe football, the new #1 team in DII/DIII, cruises to third straight victory
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Through three games of the 2021 Alaska high school football season, the Monroe Catholic Rams (3-0) have outscored opponents 152-34, with their largest margin of victory coming in a 62-12 win over Eielson Saturday. The early-season dominance has gotten the attention of the Alaska Sports Broadcasting Network, who’s recent poll has the Division III Rams as the new top team in the Division II/III landscape.
On the Air Force Base, the host Eielson Ravens kept pace with the Rams to start, as the Red and Black answered Monroe scores with a Demario Mesa touchdown reception from Evan Brown and a 65-yard dash down the sideline from Landen Salley that made it a tight, 14-12 deficit early in the second quarter. However, that was a tight as the contest would get, as Monroe’s avalanche of six unanswered touchdowns led to their third straight victory and a target on their back as the new team to knock off the pedestal.
Monroe quarterback Robert McGee threw for over 200 yards and five touchdowns, while rushing for over 100 more yards and another score. Carter Barney, McGee’s favorite target so far this season, caught three touchdowns, Billy Bast had two interceptions and a rushing touchdown, while Jett McCullough added the defenses third INT of the game, before catching his first touchdown pass of the year. Tyler Moore rushed for a score and also pounced on a fumble in the end zone for six, part of a Rams defense that suffocated the Ravens offense for the final three quarters.
The Rams will put their undefeated record to the test on Friday when they host the Redington Huskies at 6 p.m. at Kiwanis Field behind the Big Dipper, while Eielson (0-2) will visit the Valdez Buccaneers at noon on Saturday.
