Parents struggle as Fairbanks school bus contractor cancels some routes
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - After a rocky start to the school year, Durham School Services that runs the buses for Fairbanks North Star Borough has already canceled some routes.
Veronica Hassinger is a parent whose kids go to Ticasuk Brown Elementary School, located off of Badger Road. She said two bus routes were having many delays with kids often not arriving home until after 6:30 at night. On one occasion, she said she received a text that a bus was broken down and they were waiting for a new bus to bring the kids home.
Durham blames the delays on a staffing shortage. In attempt to address the delays, they began cancelling some bus routes on a rotating schedule.
However, for parents like Hassinger, this is causing even more problems.
“Some people don’t have the luxury of just being able to leave work and go and pick up their kids. They could lose their job for that. Imagine how many families, especially in this community right now, are affected by these changes. Employers don’t want employees that are going to be flaky. They don’t care about your reason, they want you there working,” Hassinger said.
She said she understands the new company needs time to get everything in order, but she also said if Durham can’t get the kids to and from school they should consider a new bus service company.
We reached out to the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District and Durham School Services for comment... but as of news time had not heard back.
