FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Savannah Fletcher is running for Seat F on the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly.

She said she is running because she loves the community and has the energy and skills to help it thrive. “There’s so many things I really want to help us achieve, and I think underlying all of that is a goal to make Fairbanks a community that is equitable and just for everyone in our community, and to really promote people, whether they’re younger, like newer workers just graduating high school or college, looking for jobs here, starting out with families, trying to find good daycares for young kids, or if you’re now retiring and getting to an older stage in life, how can we make Fairbanks a livable community for everyone?”

Fletcher continued, “I’ve been working with a lot of different community organizations in town, volunteering with adults, with students that I coach in high school, and really, I just think I have creative solutions that I want to help put forward and use my skills to the best of my ability to serve Fairbanks.”

Fletcher said she wants to increase internet access in the community. “It’s something we need to work on for all parts of the borough. The fact that people that live in downtown Fairbanks don’t have internet access, as well as folks in Salcha and Two Rivers, is something that I want to help be a part of the solution for. Additionally, a big goal of mine for Fairbanks is cleaning up some of our burnt down or more hazardous buildings. I think the Polaris building downtown is a perfect example. There’s a community group working on organizing how to bring that down, and there’s a plan in place, but we have to get the funding, and I think that takes creative partnerships between the city and the borough.”

Fletcher also wants to expand housing for renters and buyers. “We have a growing community and growing population, and we need more homes for people.”

She wants to keep improving and building upon the community’s public services. “How can we make our libraries stronger? They’ve really innovated this past year and reached so many folks, even when their doors were closed. How can we better support our libraries? How can we improve our recycling? How can we expand what we offer? How can we better manage our land waste through the transfer stations and other garbage pickup? These are things I’m excited to tackle and work on.”

Fletcher sees this as a critical year to increase voter turnout and provide strong candidates for office. “Fortunately, I bring experience from the planning commission, which I’ve been serving on for the past year, and it really seems like a ripe opportunity to move from my current role and serve in a larger capacity on the assembly. Additionally, we’re coming out of a really tough year, year and a half for everyone with COVID, and with that comes federal funding opportunities. We have a lot of COVID relief from the federal government that our borough is planning how to use right now to help us in two years, ten years down the road, and I really want to be a part of those conversations and make sure we’re using that money in a responsible and fair way for all members of Fairbanks.”

Fletcher is running against Patricia Silva in the municipal elections on October 5th.
