Fairbanks Job Center holds three-day jobs fair
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks Job Center is holding a job fair this week, where employment seekers can visit with businesses and organizations from around the community and learn about job opportunities.
The event began Tuesday, September 28, and is taking place at the State of Alaska Fairbanks Regional Office Building on 7th Avenue until September 30.
Participant tables have included KFC, the University of Alaska Fairbanks Community and Technical College, and The Banks Alehouse.
According to Missy Lizotte, Regional Manager with the Fairbanks Jobs Center, around 800 jobs are currently available with employers in their system -- a number she says represents more job openings than usual. “A lot of that has to do with what’s going on in the world. I think that people are getting out a little bit more. I think we’re trying to figure out how to make these things work and still keep ourselves here and able to help.”
Amber Hernandez, HR Specialist/Bookkeeper with the Co-op Market Grocery and Deli, was present on September 29. “We have approximately 8 openings that we need to fill. We usually are staffed at 30, and right now we have about 22. We just recently announced our general manager position is open as of yesterday, so we have that open as well as grocery clerks, deli clerks and cashiers,” she said.
Mat Croan, Branch Manager of Taylored Restoration in Fairbanks, said, “We need people. We need people bad, overloaded on work and short-staffed.” He added, “Right now we’re looking for carpenters, carpenters’ helpers, laborers, expeditors, mit(igation) technicians, pretty much anything with a pulse.”
The last day of the job fair is Thursday, September 30, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
For those seeking employment who are unable to make it to the fair, the Job Center is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. COVID-19 mitigation measures are in place at the building.
