The Fairbanks North Star Borough got a taste of it’s first season snow over the weekend. With winter in full swing the roadway commute around Fairbanks was wet and slushy.

Caitlin Frye, the Northern Region Public Information Officer with the Department of Transportation, says the Fairbanks station has moved into the winter schedule.

“That means our crews are going to be on the roads 24-7. We have two regular shifts, one that works during the day and one that works all through the night,” said Frye.

Maintenance crews are finished plowing priority 1 roads, and Monday they are servicing priority 2 and 3 roads.

“ Those are the kind of medium to smaller roads that we got in our network. After that, they will go to priority 4, so those are more like local neighborhood roads,” she stated.

Frye says they plan to operate this way all winter under DOT’s priority road system. Locating where your road is in the system can be found on DOT’s winter road priority map located on their website

Frye said, “You can go on there and see what priority your roads are and when we expect to get there with our plows after the snow stops.”

Ensuring your safety and the safety of the road maintenance crews, Frye left this bit of advice.

Frye stated, “The best piece of advice that I have for you is to give our snowplows a lot of room, and don’t pass them. The roads are always in better shape behind the snowplows than in front of them, so if you can just take a deep breath and have a little patience and travel behind the snowplows, give them plenty of space that is really the safest way to do it.”
