School Board cancels vote on supplemental sexual education materials
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks North Star Borough School Board canceled their November 2nd vote on supplemental health materials addressing sexual education.
In an email from the FNSB School District Director of Public Relations, Yumi McCulloch, explained the material is no longer out for public comment.
“The board determined it was not going to move forward until it goes through an internal process,” Yumi wrote. “The board stated that they are not ready for their vote on November 2nd.”
The proposed material was presented at the School Board’s October 19th Regular Meeting.
Six proposed items submitted by two teachers were up for review.
You can view a list of the proposed supplemental items here.
Chane Beam, the FNSB Executive Director of Teaching and Learning explained these are supplemental, and teachers would still use their normal health materials. He added it is typical for only the teacher who submitted the supplemental material be the one to use them.
It is now unclear if any of the material will come before the board for a vote.
Previous approvals include 35 supplementals from 2017 and eight supplemental items in 2018.
HB 156 and Alaska Statute AS 14.30.361 require that materials or guest speakers addressing sexual education, human reproduction education, or human sexuality be approved by the school board before use.
