FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Great Northwest Athletic Conference released it’s list of the 2021 All-Academic Team. This release highlighted twelve UAF Nanook Volleyball players.

To earn this honor, there are two requirements. The first is, they must be a sophomore or greater, academically, and secondly, their grade point average (GPA) must be higher than a 3.20. Six Nanooks have earned this honor for the first time, and the other six have been given this honor at least once prior to the 2021 All-Academic Team.

Three seniors were named. Cate Whiting (Rapid City, SD) who studies civil engineering posted a 3.90 GPA. Alaskan senior, Emily Moorhead (Chugiak, AK) is a psychology major, and held a 3.62 GPA. The final senior to earn this honor was the Berlin, Germany native, Lahra Weber. Weber is studying chemistry and posted an impressive 3.95 GPA. All three of these seniors have been given this accolade for the fourth time in their careers.

The other three players that have earned this more than once were: Zoey Keene (Anchorage, AK), Sophie Schilling (Berlin, Germany), and Taylor Overn (Portland, OR). Keene gets this recognition for the third time after holding a 3.61 GPA in Biological Studies. Schilling, who studies psychology notched a 3.97 GPA. Overn, secured her nomination with a 3.51 GPA while studying Biological Studies.

There were also six, first-time eligible Nanook student-athletes named to this list: Colleen File, Rilee White, Marine Angely, Dani Dodge, Eden Murchison, and Miyah Ohms. Of the seventeen rostered volleyball players for the Nanooks, twelve of them were eligible for this nomination, and Coach Brain Scott, produced a 100% placement rate with all twelve named to this list.

“That’s twelve of our seventeen athletes and they don’t even take into account freshmen, like freshmen can’t qualify for it right, and I know that our freshmen are right there too. Like wow! That’s an impressive number. I think our team GPA was like 3.85 last year, that’s an outstanding number. These girls work so hard, not only on the court but they dive into the books. People think that when we’re on a road trip that we’re having fun or sight seeing or something like that; they’d be really, really bored with what our routine is, cause a lot of it is involved in diving into a text book in the hotel room.”

To specify, academic status and athletic eligibility status are two different things. One might take a redshirt year or be a freshman athletically due to the extra year of eligibility given to all student athletes by the NCAA. Both of these scenarios would constitute academic status without logging games or statistics on an athletic roster.
