FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - On the evening of Sunday, November 7th, the Fairbanks Police Department (FPD) and other law enforcement agencies responded to a report of shots fired at the Airport Way Safeway.

Two victims were taken two Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, where one, an adult male, was pronounced dead.

The other, also an adult male, was treated for a gunshot wound TO his foot, and has been released.

Shortly after the incident, Joshua Eric Butcher turned himself into the police station and refused to answer questions without a lawyer present.

FPD Chief Ron Dupee has advice for anyone who may find themselves present during a situation like this.

“The first thing you need to do is look out for your safety,” Dupee said. “Get to a safe place. If you can, use your phone. Call 9-1-1, [with] as much detail as possible about where the assailant is, what they’re doing, what they’re wearing, what they look like, so responding officers have an idea on the basics - who, what, why, when and where - and then, obviously, providing that information to the officers once they’re on scene.”
