Three teams advance to state after volleyball regional championships
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The 4A high school volleyball regionals began on November 3rd and ended the following night.
The first game was played between the West Valley wolfpack and the Lathrop malemutes. These two rivals have gone back and forth all season creating close games with Lathrop winning the majority of them and Wednesday’s game look similar to those of the past. The first two periods went to the malemutes, each with a large score disparity going 25-13 and 25-15. The wolfpack managed to pull ahead of the malemutes in the third set however taking the win by three points. West Valley rocketed off of the momentum of their last win and gained an 11 point lead in the fourth going as far as 6-17 on the score board. When it looked as though Lathrop was about to loose in utter defeat, they managed a come back some might call miraculous. Once back on fighting ground, the purple and gold held the wolfpack at game for 6 rally’s before Claire Olsen finally made a kill on Lathrop making another 22-25 end of set score. It would be Lathrop however taking the win in the final set ending West Valley’s season.
The next night Lathrop had to defend their chance at state against number one seat North Pole. This game would also end in five. Lathrop once again took the first two sets going 18-25 and 16-25. But all of the momentum built up was thrown out when Serenity Fa’asao incurred an injury on the court. From this point forward it patriots pushed their way to wins. In the third though it was a close score, the red, white, and blue took the win 25-22. From the spark that came in the third period, a fire grew to blaze on the court as the patriots had their own tea party toppling Lathrop 25-11. In the fifth set the patriots pounded the ball over and over ending the the game quickly with 15-6 score. They took the whole match 3 to 2 and claimed the title of regional champion moving onto state.
Coach William commented on the attributes of the teams win. “I mean they’ve been through the trenches over the years. For many of them this is the seventh and eighth year playing together. They’re a very close knit group of girls that want to show up and really help support each other and make it a team win and be there for each other.”
As for the 3A regional championship, it would be a tale of Monroe versus Eielson. These two team faced off on Friday night with Eielson taking the win in five sets. However due to the games following, these foes faced each other again in a rematch on Saturday. This game would end in a swift 3-0 defeat for Eielson meaning that the Monroe Catholic rams would indeed go onto to state. In the Battle for the regional champ title however, the rams lost to the Valdez Buccaneers in three sets. Valdez takes the title and both Monroe and Valdez go down to Anchorage to try for the state title.
