FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Alaskans looking to pursue a career in education or public service have an opportunity to receive a long-running scholarship.

Since 1977, the Nick Begich Scholarship Intern Fund has awarded over half a million dollars in funds to help Alaskans pursue a career in education or public service.

According to Executive Director Tom Begich, the scholarship is highly competitive, with between 10 and 15 are awarded each year. “We try to encourage Alaskans to become civically engaged and to choose those paths, either serving the public or educating other Alaskans,” he said.

The scholarship primarily goes to high school students looking to enter an accredited college or university. The minimum scholarship amount is $1000. “We’ve had folks who have attended school overseas, Oxford, and we’ve had folks who have gone to all the Ivy League colleges as well as University of Alaska Anchorage and University of Alaska Fairbanks,” Begich explained.

In their application, potential recipients include their transcript and letters of reference. They also complete an essay talking about their long-term career goals.

Begich’s advice: write a good essay. “They really like to see your writing skill in your essays. You can have straight As and write a terrible essay, and you’re not going to make the cut.”

Past recipients include a member of the Alaska State Legislature and other government officials. Begich elaborated, “We’ve had any number of folks that have gone on to careers in public service and careers in education.”

Begich said administering the scholarship means “I get to see how these people have made a difference in Alaska.”

Applications for the 2022-2023 school year must be postmarked or submitted online by February 28th, 2022. Winners will be announced in June.
