Pet of the Week: Betty Boop - the cute as a button guinea pig
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Betty Boop is a cute little critter who loves her greens and fresh peppers, and she’s looking for a loving family to call her own.
Here’s what Britley Calkins, an animal handler with Fairbanks North Star Borough Animal Shelter, had to say:
“Betty Boop is a 4-year-old guinea pig available for adoption here at the shelter. She was surrendered with quite a few different guinea pigs.
Guinea pigs tend to enjoy being housed in groups and having buddies. She’s currently being housed with Sally and Petunia here at the shelter, but they’re not overly bonded so we’re not requiring that they go to the same household. However, they may enjoy each other’s company.
If you’re not familiar with guinea pigs, a few things about these little ones. They should have timothy hay available at all times for their teeth and GI health. They should have a measured amount of pellet food as well as fresh greens on a daily basis, and they also need supplemental Vitamin C. This can come in the form of peppers, oranges, kale, and they also make supplements that you can add to their water. Currently Betty Boop has been really enjoying the fresh peppers.
Guinea pigs can be litterbox trained; however, Betty Boop hasn’t quite figured that out yet here at the shelter. She drinks great out of a water bottle however and she’s a really friendly guinea pig. If you are interested in meeting Miss Betty Boop or any of her guinea pig friends, please give the shelter a call. We also have plenty of dogs, cats, rabbits, and hamsters available for adoption here at the shelter!”
