FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) -Abigail Haas has signed her national letter of intent to ski for UAF.

Haas is coming out of the Lathrop high school ski program claiming regional titles last year and a top ten finish at state in 2020. Haas also has participated on the cross country running team while at Lathrop taking a top 20 spot at state in the running arena. Haas reflected on what it meant to be a malemute emphasizing the comradery she had come to know and appreciate.

We asked Haas why she chose UAF and she said, “It wasn’t until I visited UAF and I saw their team community, that I realized that I just felt so comfortable on that team and I also felt like that’s gonna be the team that I can make the most progress. And there’s people there that can push but then also they have such a good support system.” Haas also said spoke the specific skiing conditions in the interior of Alaska explaining, “there’s something special you get from get from growing up in Fairbanks, and especially with skiing. It’s so different skiing here than it is anywhere else. And I’ve been watching the UAF skiers for so long you know; like on the trails even when was a little kid and now I get to be one of them and that just is so cool.” Haas also expressed an interest in joining the cross country running team and participating in both sports just like her former competitor and soon to be teammate Kendall Kramer. Her advice to the young athletes who want to go to college for sports is to, “just keep trying”, because you won’t know how far you can go if you don’t keep trying.

Haas admitted to looking elsewhere for university initially, but is happy with her choice along with her parents who were supportive of her going outside of Alaska for school.

Currently ranked second in her class, Haas is on track to leave college with a 4.0 and is looking at studying civil engineering for her major.

We look forward to seeing her on the trails once again as she moves onto the next level.
