High School Rifle ends its season at TVSA for regionals
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Last weekend (November 19 and 20) the interior high school rifle teams finished their season with the Mid-Alaska Conference regional tournament.
In the past, this event has taken place at the E.F. Horton range in the Patty Center at UAF so the shooters could get used to the environment in preparation for the Junior Olympics qualifiers. This year however, the four teams decided to hold the event at the Tanana Valley Sportsmen’s Association. They have spent the majority of the season holding matches at TVSA with a few exceptions for Delta.
As the season had gone thus far, Lathrop remained dominant heading into regionals while Delta remained at the bottom of the rankings as they struggled to have rifle program this year. For regionals though, the results for the teams went as anyone who followed the sport might expect. In first place was the Lathrop Malemutes. The Malemutes shot 4,436 aggregate points with a 2,239 in air rifle and a 2,197 in small-bore. Following the Malemutes, were the Hutchison Hawks. The Hawks placed in second with a total score of 4,374. For air rifle they shot a 2,202 and for small-bore they shot 2,172 points. The Wolfpack took third with 4,281 points while Delta took last with a total of 4,147 points.
Top three shooters for air rifle were Noah Meierotto of Lathrop taking first with a score of 574. Coming in second, was Jessie Merrion who shot a 563 and her teammate Tristan Taylor came in third. They both shot for Hutchison. Meierotto had 23 bulls-eyes while Merrion had 22 and Taylor shot 20.
In Small-bore however, it was purple and gold all around as Lathrop dominated the discipline. In third for .22 was Noah Meierotto with a score of 551 and 15 bulls-eyes. In second place it was Chyane Burns shooting a 552 with 15 bulls-eyes of her own. Finally in the top spot for small-bore, it was Sierra Accola who shot a 553 making 12 bulls-eyes. Accola and Burns also both shot their personal best for regionals in small-bore.
There were many other personal bests shot, as Lathrop had four non competing shooters get PB’s. For Hutch, Merrion shot a PB in small-bore along with 4 other teammates. Hutch also had a non-competing PB for air rifle. West Valley had 4 PB’s for three shooters, while Delta had one competing PB in small-bore.
