FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Asyia Shank has signed her national letter of intent, committing to Davenport University, located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Shank is a swimmer coming out of the Midnight Sun Swim Team and the West Valley Wolfpack.

Currently ranking 8th in the state for her sport of choice, Shank has had the recent victory of taking 5th place for the 100 yard butterfly down in Anchorage for the State tournament. She also has a plethora of other wins. In 2019 she had a 1st place victory in the state championships for club swim, and many top ten finishes since 2018.

Shank expressed that she was drawn to Davenport because it had a welcoming atmosphere and because she really liked the campus layout and functionality. While at Davenport, she plans to study biology.

When she reflecting on her time at West Valley, she said that the size of the school and the swim team made her feel like there was more support for her as a student athlete to pursue her passions.

Shank however expressed that club swimming had benefits she didn’t get from prep swim. “um I really liked with mid night sun that I could travel a lot more and I just got a lot closer with the team because I had been with them since I was so young.”

As for advice to younger swimmers, this is what she had to say, “I’d say just find your rhythm and if you really enjoy it, keep hard work with it and focus on it because it can get you places.”

Her mother expressed pride for Asyia stating that she has ben working at this since she was 5, and was happy Asyia got to go where she wanted. Asyia’s mom also stated that she felt that it was good that her daughter would be able to experience life outside of Alaska.

Congratulations Asyia.
