Winter weather update for Interior Alaska
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The last 24 hour snow storm saw anywhere from 9 to 12 inches of new snow around the Fairbanks area. The snowfall and wind has since calmed down considerably throughout the day and into the evening.
While we may see another couple inches of snow tonight (Wednesday), tomorrow is predicted to see a slowing down of snow conditions.
According to Meteorologist Jonathan Chriest from the National Weather Service, this latest weather system brought conditions rarely seen in the Interior.
“The Fairbanks Airport actually recorded blizzard conditions for about an hour this morning, which is very rare for the Fairbanks area. Delta Junction area also recorded blizzard conditions for around 2 hours this afternoon.”
“The Fairbanks Airport recorded a visibility of one quarter mile with wind gusts greater than 35 miles per hour.”
Another weather system is predicted to pass over the Interior on Friday, but it is expected to only drop one to three inches of snow on us.
Meanwhile, the Fairbanks North Star Borough has announced that all facilities and services, including the MACS Transit and Van Tran will continue to be closed through Thursday, December 30.
Fairbanks City Hall will be open by appointment only on Thursday, December 30 and Friday, December 31. Departments will remain available to the public by phone.
