FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Richardson Highway is closed in both directions from milepost 186 to 218 as of Monday, January 3.

Alaska Department of Transportation (DOT) reported blizzard conditions were still in effect as of 10:00 a.m. Monday with heavy snow drifting up to 3 feet across the highway. Mile marker 218 is near the Trims DOT maintenance location.

According to Caitlyn Frye, Public Information Officer for the Alaska Department of Transportation, crews on are the scene and hope to open the road soon.

“The highway is currently closed right now because we have high winds and snow,” Frye explained, “and that creates drifts in the road that make it impassable. Crews are out there working right now. It sounds like the winds have died down a little bit, so that’s working in our favor. But we don’t expect it to be open before this evening.”

Frye continued, “Also closed are the two summits on the Steese Highway - that’s 12 Mile Summit and Eagle Summit. Those are also closed because of high winds and heavy drifting, and our crews are out there working that right now to try and get it open.”

Updates on the road conditions and closures can be found on the Department of Transportation’s 511 website.
