FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks North Star Borough School Board held a regular meeting on Tuesday, March 1, 2022. The meeting was hosted in the Administrative Center, during which the board moved to approve two items.

This included resolution 2022-17 which recognizes April as “The Month of the Military Child,” as well as an action item regarding Ladd Elementary’s K-8 status. On the latter item, the board also voted unanimously to keep Ladd as a K-8 institution next school year.

According to the meeting documents: “Resolution 2022-17 recognizes April 2022 as the Month of the Military Child throughout the district and encourages staff, students, parents, community members, and district, community, and military leaders to observe the month with celebration, lessons, guest speakers, and other activities that honor, support, and thank our military children and the family members who care for them.”

According to Colonel Nate Surrey, Fort Wainwright Army Post Representative, the resolution fosters a sense of support in the community, which includes children of the military.

Col. Surrey said, “Thank you for recognizing these children for the month of April in support of our families. That [support] you continue to do... is why I asked to come back to Fort Wainwright after 20 years of absence, because of the support that you all give us. Thank you so much!”
