FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - For the first time in West Valley Wolfpack history, a boy’s basketball player has been awarded the Gatorade Player of the Year. Erhart is a major piece in the Wolfpack’s 24-0 record as they prepare to complete the undefeated season at a 4A ASAA State Championship.

“It’s exciting. It’s the first one in West Valley so, its definitely cool to have Gatorade Player of the Year,” said Erhart. “It feels good because I just work hard, and I wouldn’t have expected to get Gatorade Player of the Year a year ago, so...”

Erhart, a 6-foot-2 junior guard, leads the Wolfpack this season in virtually every statistical category. Erhart averaged 16.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.8 steals, and 2.5 assists. Stewart was also named the to the all-Mid-Alaska Conference team and was a tournament MVP twice this season (Palmer Elks Showdown and Whaler Invitational. In addition to having a successful season on the court, Erhart also worked hard in the classroom averaging all B’s during the academic year.

“Stew is a great kid,” said West Valley head coach Colton Growden. “He’s a good student in the classroom. He’s great on the court. He is an absolute gym rat. He lives in the gym... lives and breathes basketball.”

Stewart Erhart has accomplished something that hasn’t been done before as a player for West Valley boy’s basketball. Five West Valley girls have won the basketball Gatorade Player of the Year prior to Erhart winning the award this season. Now, and the rest of Wolfpack will look to cap off the perfect season with a state championship.

The brackets for the 4A (and 3A) ASAA basketball state tournaments will be released Sunday at 6:00 P.M., and the state tournament begins Wednesday, at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage.
