FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - On Saturday, March 19, the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) is putting on a choir concert with the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA).

“It’s been great to be able to finally have this come to fruition,” said Madeline Andriesen, a soprano at UAF.

Guests from UAA have come up to Fairbanks to sing alongside UAF’s voice majors. “We flew in this afternoon. It’s sunny and warm in Fairbanks, which is amazing,” said UAA Baritone Warren Weinstein.

They’re preparing an hour and a half of live entertainment. According to Andriesen, “Singing and making music is all about the community and all about working with other people, and being able to bring something and change somebody’s life.”

Titled “Unity, Diversity and Harmony: A Performance of Music Theater Excerpts”, the concert emphasizes themes of inclusion. “That’s kind of our message for the audience, is diversity and coming together,” Andriesen said.

“The songs were picked kind of for those aspects of either the music itself or the nature of the musical that it comes from,” Weinstein explained .

The program includes songs from popular musicals including “Hamilton”, “Little Shop of Horrors” and “The Greatest Showman.” “There’s a wide variety of musical theatre numbers in this show,” Andriesen said.

With COVID restrictions around the U.S. being lifted, performers are excited to be in front of a live audience. Weinstein said, “Hearing a live person laugh or applaud or cheer is so cathartic. It’s so enriching in the moment.”

The show will take place Saturday at Davis Concert hall on UAF’s Troth Yeddha campus at 7:30 p.m.
