Fairbanks Noel Wien Library hosts workshops for an easier transition into life after high school
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks Noel Wien Library is putting on a four-part series called, “Life After High School - Skills for Young Adults: Job and Career Options.”
According to Katelyn Rose, Young Adult Librarian with the FNSB libraries, the series was developed to help young adults in the community to gain the life skills needed to be successful after high school.
Rose says organizers are “trying to aim it for kids who will be graduating soon, or maybe have gotten their GED, or who have graduated and aren’t going to college. They don’t have immediate access to all of the resources that UAF (University of Alaska Fairbanks) have or other colleges have.”
According to Rose, the series also hopes to provide “a bridge between our teenage population and our young adult population, and really making sure that community resources are spread out equitably for everyone who needs them.”
By allowing community resources to flourish specifically within the Noel Wien Library, the series reinforces that this service can give direction to those who may need a push. Rose continued, “I think that this series, in particular, fits in really well with the library’s goals because we are a source for resources. A lot of times when people think of that, we think of hard copies of books or things that you can physically check out - but we have so many information resources across all sorts of formats, and I feel like being able to connect community members with experts is a really valuable resource that is often overlooked.”
The session held Wednesday, March 30th and will focus on, “Where to Look and How to Decide What Your Next Steps Will Be.”
A Future Session, Wednesday, April 27th is how to “Apply for Anything: Learn to Create or Improve your Resume, Cover Letter, References.”
