Super 8 Motel stabbing leaves one man dead and another in custody
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Fairbanks Police were called to the Super 8 Motel on Airport Road early Monday morning at 4:15 a.m. after an employee reported a disturbance involving guests and a stabbing.
Upon arrival, officers were directed by a Jesse Sanderson, age 32, from Fairbanks to a victim lying on the sidewalk outside the motel.
The victim, 32-year-old Jonathon Gustafson, was found with a stab wound to the chest and was transported to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital for treatment. He later died from his injuries. According to the Fairbanks Police Department press release, Sanderson was acquainted with the victim and was seen hanging out at the motel during the night. The press release also says drugs appear to be a factor.
Sanderson told Fairbanks Police, Gustafson had thrown a knife at his face, after which he stabbed him. Police found his statement to be inconsistent with witness statements.
Hours before the stabbing, officers had been in contact with Sanderson and seized a firearm and knife from him. They also noted that he appeared to be under the influence of narcotics.
Sanderson was arrested on one count of second-degree murder and was booked at the Fairbanks Correctional Center. He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon.
Anyone with information regarding this homicide is asked to contact Fairbanks Police Department Lieutenant Amy Davis at 907-450-6565.
