Deadline approaches for Alaskans to change out studded winter tires
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - As break-up season continues, the time has come for Alaskans to change out their studded vehicle tires.
The deadline for drivers throughout most of the state, including the Interior region, is May 1st.
Meanwhile, the Southeast region, Kodiak Island, and other areas south of latitude 60 are required to change out even earlier, with a deadline of April 15th.
Those who continue to drive with studded tires past the deadline risk being issued a citation, according to Alaska State Troopers.
“During non-snow seasons, it causes additional wear to the roads,” said Alaska State Trooper Joshua Schoeffel. “If you think about the metal-to-asphalt or concrete contact, it’s going to wear away at that surface, and then it could also cause additional hazard. That metal on the surface, when there’s no ice present, could cause your tires to slip when you’re trying to stop or accelerate.”
