FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - “They ask me how much do I owe you and I just said ‘eh don’t worry about it; just pay it forward someday,’” said Monte Pearson, who is one of the two winners of a 2022 Legends and Heroes award.

The event is put on by the Midnight Sun Council, Boy Scouts of America, and the award goes to local community members who exemplify the Boy Scout oath and law.

CJ Stewart, the development director with the Midnight Sun Council Boy Scouts of America said, “Our mission for the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare the young people to make moral and ethical decisions throughout their lifetime guided by the Scout oath and law.”

Since creating this award and fundraising banquet in 2019, the scouts have recognized one local hero and one local legend in the community each year.

This year Craig Compeau is being honored with the legend award, and Pearson will be given the hero award. The council believes these two have shown what it takes to give back to their community without expecting anything in return.

“That in itself is a great example to our youth; so that’s how we chose Monte and Craig this year both,” Stewart explained.

Both of the honorees will attend the banquet at Compeau’s showroom on Wednesday May 18th to receive their awards surrounded by their friends, family and community members.

Pearson said, “I was excited, I was honored by it. It represented what the Boy Scout code was.”

The event will feature a roast of the winners and - in that spirit - plenty of pulled pork and prime rib from local restaurants to go around.

They will be auctioning off a trip to Maui, a trip to Costa Rica, and a handmade wooden canoe from a local builder.

All of the proceeds from the auction will support the Boy Scout council facilities and local youth development.

Stewart says, “We welcome anybody that wants to come out and spend the evening with us to come on out.”
