FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Practicing safe driving is more than just assuming the “10 and 2” position on the steering wheel or keeping your eyes on the road.

Now through June 6th, the Alaska State Troopers will heavily be enforcing seatbelt laws as a part of the Click It Or Ticket campaign.

“It is the law to wear a seatbelt while you’re traveling in a motor vehicle, but it may also save your life,” said Alaska State Trooper, Nathan Hollenbeck. “With the expected summer months coming up and the Memorial Day holiday, we expect more travelers to be out on the roadway, so Alaska State Troopers throughout the state will be doing an increased enforcement on seatbelt violations.”

The troopers will be conducting traffic stops across the Fairbanks area to ensure all laws behind the wheel are being followed. These include things like reckless driving and driving under the influence.

“We want to encourage drivers to practice safe driving. That includes the driver and passengers wearing seatbelts, but that also children are properly secured in the vehicle as well,” Hollenbeck said.

Nationwide about 15,000 lives were saved in 2017 due to drivers wearing their seatbelts.

The director of the Alaska State Troopers, Colonel Bryan Barlow says it doesn’t take long to buckle up, and it’s the right thing to do.

Drivers who notice dangerous driving are encouraged to dial 911 and report a REDDI, which is an acronym for “report every dangerous driver immediately.”
