FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - With the snow gone and the sun staying out longer, we can also expect the construction projects that come along with summer.

Bit by bit, the State of Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities (DOT) has been working to improve University Avenue. Beginning on Friday, May 20th the stretch of University between the Mitchell Expressway and 19th Avenue will be closed. This project will widen the road, install a median and sidewalks, and relocate utilities.

According to Danielle Tessen, Public Information Officer for DOT, the section will be closed until Friday, September 9th as work is done on the area, including deep excavations.

“We didn’t come up with that decision lightly,” she said. “We really looked at the project. We looked at the deep excavations were having to do. We’ve got five different 8′ excavation holes that we’re going to have to make in order to get some old soil that is in there from a slough that used to run through, and we have to remove that soil so that as we put in the new road and the new sidewalks that the road is able to have that good foundation with good materials. So we’re closing this road because we really have a lot of deep utility work and we have to pull out a bunch of old soil that is not good material for the road.”

What residents should know, according to Tessen, is that there is still “business access, pedestrian access, and non-motorized access.” She encourages community members to “follow flaggers, follow cones, and stay within in those safe areas for pedestrians to go through. ”
