FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - It grew from a harmless campfire to 9 acre burn, leading firefighters put out the largest fire within Fairbanks city limits in 12 years

On Thursday May 19th an unattended camp fire near the footbridge on Chena Landing Loop grew to nine acres in just under an hour.

Multiple concerned citizens made calls to the City of Fairbanks Fire Department and the Alaska Division of Forestry to report the incident, and seven units were sent to respond to the fire.

Firefighters were able to control the flames within just two hours of arriving at the scene.

Clean up crews were out Friday and expected to continue working into Saturday.

One firefighter told us that it is not uncommon for wildfires to be started from campgrounds by small fires that aren’t fully put out, especially around this time of year.
