This game will be the first of four at the Hawai’i-Alaska Challenge. The other opponents Alaska will face will be: Chaminade, Hawai’i Pacific, and Chaminade again. These games will be played in Honolulu.

The following week, the Nanooks will be back be closer to home in Anchorage at the UAA Volleyball Invitational with another four games in three days. Point Loma (CA), Emmanuel College (GA), Lubbock Christian University (TX), and Pittsburg State University (KS) will be the four teams Alaska will see in Anchorage.

The third and final tournament of Alaska’s schedule will be at home inside the Alaska Airlines Gymnasium at the Patty Center. September 1 will be the home debut for the blue and gold against Black Hills State University (SD). Friday, the Nooks will play Florida Southern College, and Saturday will conclude the festivities with two games of the University of Arkansas Fort Smith and University of Findlay (OH).

“The preseason is nice,” said Coach Scott. It jam-packs a whole lot of matches all in one weekend. It really helps us jump right into it, and it’s against some tough competition too. All of it is in hopes that all of these tough teams gets us ready for the GNAC because the GNAC is maybe the toughest conference in the country.”

The first twelve of the thirty game season will be in the three opening tournaments before the Nanooks begin their GNAC play. The first two games of the weekend will be on the comfort of their own gym with Western Oregon and Saint Martin’s (September 8 and 10). The following weekend will be the first conference road trip for Alaska, and that trip will entail Seattle Pacific and MSUB.

The following weekend will be the only back-to-back home weekend for Alaska. September 22 and 24, the Nanooks will host Simon Fraser, and Western Washington, respectively. This will be the first time the Nooks will get a crack at the Vikings, and Western Washington was the only GNAC team that the Nanooks didn’t beat last season.

“We came close twice with Western Washington last year,” recalled Scott. “That’s the only team I haven’t beaten since I’ve been here yet. So, I definitely have... I’d like to crack that one.”

The following weekend, the first in-state rivalry game of the season against UAA. The Seawolves will come to town for the lone game of the weekend, Saturday, October 1. UAA and UAF each won one game last season, and the home team was victorious both times.

“Anchorage is an in-state rival, and we definitely want to win that battle,” stated Scott regarding the two-game season series with the Seawolves.

Hitting the road once again, the Nooks will play their first games against Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington of the season, October 6 and 8. In the second half of their conference schedule, MSUB and Seattle Pacific will make their way to Fairbanks to round off their season series.

Then, Alaska heads on the road for their only back-to-back conference road weekends. Western Washington and Simon Fraser the first two opponents, and then UAA will mark the end of the Nooks October schedule.

The last homestand for Alaska will be against Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene to begin the first weekend in November, and then the Nanooks will close out the regular season on the road with games at Saint Martin’s and Western Oregon.

“I could say the same thing week in and week out,” said Coach Scott on the strength of schedule Alaska faces in conference portion of their season. “That’s the best thing about the GNAC: every week, you’re like ‘Oh, I can’t wait for this match. This is going to be a fun one’.”
