FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Crews can be seen along Airport Way, part of a 10.2 million dollar project to make improvements in and around the road in Fairbanks.

According to Kaitlin Williams, Publications Specialist with the Alaska Department of Transportation (DOT), “We are working to improve the corridor between the Mitchell Expressway that connects to the Fairbanks International Airport.”

For now, the construction work centers around Dale and Hoselton Roads.

Hoselton runs underneath the Mitchell Expressway. “We’re cutting the grade down to create more clearance for all of the tour bus and larger traffic that frequents the road,” Williams said.

Because of this work, Hoselton may see intermittent closures to traffic over the coming week. However, Williams said, “We will be allowing access to all the businesses through there and you will be able to go around it by using Airport Way.”

This construction will eventually make its way onto Airport Way itself. “We will keep traffic flowing, and it is our goal to keep it flowing with very minimal impacts to the public,” she explained.

DOT is also creating a path for bikes and pedestrians that will run from the airport to Hoselton, “and this is really going to increase connectivity for the area users as well as increase safety, especially for pedestrians,” said Williams.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year’s construction season.
