Fairbanks Department of Motor Vehicles moves to new location
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - If you have recently needed to conduct any business at the Fairbanks Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), chances are you headed to the familiar site on Peger Road. Upon arrival, you were greeted with a sign stating the DMV has moved.
For over 30 years the Fairbanks DMV has been located at 1979 Peger Road and has shared space in the same building as the Department of Public Safety.
On July 29, the Fairbanks DMV agency moved to a new location, 414 3rd Street. Many people remember this building as a familiar former-restaurant.
DMV is already experiencing the benefits of the new location and the services provided remain the same.
Joshua Martinez, DMV Office Manager explains some of the perks. “We got a large parking lot for our customers.” Martinez adds, “We got a conference room in the facility now where we can hold our monthly meetings, help repurpose a vacant building for the Fairbanks community, and also better lighting for our DMV photos.”
Martinez says, “The office anticipates a more efficient workflow.” He mentions the conference room has increased training efficiency and the windows have helped boost the environment thanks to the natural lighting which was absent at the prior location.
Additional benefits include a more central location and being closer to Ft. Wainwright Army Base.
The move to the new location for DMV was necessary, as the Department of Public Safety requested a need for expansion.
According to Alaska State Trooper Sergeant, Lee Bruce, the additional space will allow for an increase in personnel, equipment, and services.
Bruce said, “So our wildlife troopers will be moving into the area that was formerly occupied by the DMV. Past that there’s going to be expansions on the current building to move into a new evidence facility and also house equipment lockers for our Special Emergency Reaction Team.”
While there is no official start date to the expansion project, the Alaska State Troopers are hoping to see the work begin before 2023.
