FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Alaska Nanooks volleyball team is on campus, and their 2022 season began this week. As head coach, Brian Scott, enters his eighth season at the helm of the program, he has added two of his former student athletes to his coaching staff.

Cate Whiting and Emily Moorhead finished their collegiate playing careers following the 2021 season, but will return to the Patty Center for another season, but in new roles.

“We get the benefit of still having their insight with what happens out there on the court,” said Head Coach, Brian Scott. “They’re just going to make us better.”

In addition to Scott speaking highly of the Whiting-Moorhead tandem, the current players on the roster are thrilled to have two of their seven teammates that graduated last season returning even though it won’t be in the same role.

“I think they bring something so valuable,” commented Sophomore, Rilee White. “Especially just from being on the court and knowing the mentality we’re all going through. They add an extra level... they know what’s inside our heads, and they know how to get us through maybe tough times. They’re going to push us because they know our abilities.”

Cate Whiting has been in Fairbanks since 2017 when she joined the program out of high school in Rapid City, South Dakota. Whiting is studying civil engineering.

“I couldn’t walk away from campus,” said Whiting. “I’m really excited to be back. Just seeing the new group of girls is awesome.”

Emily Moorhead joined the program as a true freshman too, but didn’t have to travel nearly as far as Whiting to get here. Moorhead graduated from Chugiak High School and is studying psychology.

“I feel like this was the natural ending of Cate and I’s career just to come and transition into the role of coaching feels awesome,” mentioned Moorhead. ”We have some new girls, and they’re all really excited. It’s great to see a bunch of new changes in the Patty Center. Overall, I’m just really excited -- a little bittersweet, but awesome. Excited for what’s next.”

The Nanooks will open their 2022 season August 19 in Honolulu, Hawai’i. This is the second consecutive season the Nanooks will be heading to Hawai’i and will have two games on the nineteenth against the University of Hawai’i at Hilo and Chaminade University. This trip is part of the Hawai’i-Alaska Challenge.

The following weekend will be spent in Anchorage at the UAA Volleyball Invitational. Three weeks into the season is when the Nanooks will fill the court at the Alaska Airlines Gymnasium during their Denali State Bank Ice Block Classic.
