FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Chena River State Recreation Site, located off of Geraghty Avenue in Fairbanks, opened today, Friday, August 26 at noon.

The 23.8 acre recreation area has seen state and local agencies working together, each tackling specific tasks in the cleanup effort, in hopes of reopening the recreation site for public use this season.

A big thank you goes out to the Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Fire Protection and Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation, in partnership with the City of Fairbanks for making this possible.

For now, the boat launch area and park grounds will be open to the public. Hours of operation and parking will be 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. The park gates will remain open throughout the day.

The campsites, however, will be closed to the public and will be blocked off for the remainder of this season.

Security will include daily or near daily sweeps of the area around closing hours by local law enforcement.

Maintenance will be handled by both the Department of Parks and Recreation and litter clean-up will be taken care of daily by the Fairbank Rescue Mission thanks to a contract they signed with the State of Alaska.
