FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Alaska Nanooks rifle team has signed a partnership with Lapua, a Finnish ammunition manufacturer, to be the exclusive ammo supplier of the Nanooks. Lapua has been a major supplier of competition ammunition of national and Olympic championship events.

“It’s a huge step in the right direction for our student-athletes, ensuring they always the absolute, highest-level resources,” said head coach, Will Anti. “That was the whole goal of the partnership here.”

In the 2021 season, the Nanooks broke multiple NCAA records, and used Lapua’s Midas+ all season long. “It’s going to provide the best ammunition in the world to our student-athletes on a consistent basis,” continued Anti.

Anti and the Nanooks have pieced together a deal that is first of its kind. Allowing the team to get consistent, top of the line ammunition for the entire season.

“It’s the first exclusivity deal with an ammunition company,” claimed Anti. “It’s a big deal.”

As part of the deal, there will be many additions of the Lapua logo to the E.F. Horton Rifle Range, on shooting gear, more team gear, and social media releases.

Rifle is not like other sports where you can buy a one hundred baseballs, a dozen basketballs, etc. Rounds are one-time use only and in the average practice, each athlete puts down 150 shots per day (eight athletes are on the 2022-23 roster). That’s 1,200 rounds in one day for the Nanooks.

Expanding the numbers from one day to a full season, Anti estimated the team will go through 20 cases of ammunition or 200,000 rounds. “It’s an enormous amount ammunition, and it’s an enormous contribution from Lapua,” said Anti.

“It’s hugely significant,” added Anti, “because when you’re shooting this quality of ammo, I mean this is ammunition that we’re going to use to train with every day and it’s equally ammunition we could use that one of our teammates could feasibly use to win an Olympic Gold Medal.”

Anti, and the entire Nanook Rifle team were thrilled to have this Lapua partnership come to fruition. The Nanooks will start their season, October 7-8 hosting the Ohio State Buckeyes to start their 2022-23 season.
