Fairbanks Drama Association plants memorial tree for Peggy Ferguson
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - A new tree stands outside the Hap Ryder Riverfront Theatre in Fairbanks as a memorial for an anchor of the performing arts community in Fairbanks.
On the afternoon of Tuesday, September 6, representatives from the Fairbanks Drama Association (FDA) and the Fairbanks Arbor Day Committee gathered in front of the theater to honor Peggy Ferguson, FDA’s late Executive Director.
The Paper Birch tree, her favorite type, is expected to grow tall and proud right in front of the nonprofit along the banks of the Chena River.
Ferguson died in December 2021, but according to friends and family, her theater legacy in Fairbanks and Alaska as a whole, lives on.
Cindy Wright, Executive Director of FDA, said, “She just brought us to a higher level of excellence when it comes to theater education and theater support and quality and working very hard to get people in big industries to help support local arts, local community theater.”
Steve Mitchell, Board Vice-President for FDA, agreed, adding, “She really brought the best out of everybody, whether they were experienced on a stage or backstage.”
