FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - From September 26 to September 30, Fairbanks is hosting the 2022 Alaska Fire Conference, which hasn’t convened since the before the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Alaska Fire Conference is an annual gathering of firefighters from across the state, all attending to share knowledge and skills. During the conference, over 200 fire fighters will participate in classroom sessions and hands-on training with departments from the Interior. They will share their facilities and knowledge and teach other departments specialized skills that are utilized in the Interior.

The conference began Monday at the Westmark Hotel in downtown Fairbanks, after the Covid-19 pandemic caused cancellations in 2020 and 2021.

The various classroom sessions include topics such as building relationships, vehicle fleet maintenance and management, leadership and fire station management. For the hands on training, fire fighters will work on hose movement strategies, search and rescue, fire suppression and even live burns.

One of the highlight events will take place on Tuesday, September 27, when a live burn training will be conducted at the Sacred Heart Cathedral on Airport Way. The training is scheduled to happen between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Smoke and flames will be visible. Fire fighters will be present on location before, during, and after the live burn training session.
