Municipal Elections are Tuesday, October 4 in the Fairbanks North Star Borough
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Municipal Elections are Tuesday, October 4. Voters in the Fairbanks North Star Borough will have the opportunity to vote for three Borough Assembly and two School Board seats. Fairbanks residents will vote for Fairbanks City Mayor and two City Council seats. North Pole residents will vote for two North Pole City Council seats.
Additionally, two important ballot measures regarding the Fairbanks North Star Borough will be included in the Municipal Elections; Proposition 1 and Proposition 2.
Proposition 1 concerns the so-called “Tax Cap” on properties in the borough. A “YES” vote keeps the tax cap as it is. A “NO” vote will also keep the tax cap, but will allow the Borough Assembly to modify or negate the tax cap in the future by a simple majority vote.
Proposition 2 concerns how members of the assembly are elected in the Fairbanks North Star Borough. Currently all members of the assembly are elected “at-large”. This means all residents of the borough vote for all borough seats. Every 10 years, voters are asked whether they want to keep this system in place or change it. A “YES” vote on Proposition 2 keeps the system as is. A “NO” vote would start a process where assembly seats are divided geographically based on population.
However you vote and whoever you vote for, please get out and vote. The polls are open until 8 p.m.
