FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - An attempted Fairbanks traffic stop in the early morning hours resulted in the death of an adult male.

According to a press release, Fairbanks Police attempted to contact a driver, later identified as Carl Robert Ravenscroft, about 3:30 a.m. this morning near Airport Way and Market Street. He was reportedly under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Officers pursued the vehicle down Peger Road after Ravenscroft failed to stop. Ravenscroft then drove the vehicle into a steep gravel pit, where it became submerged in deep water. Ravenscroft made it out of the vehicle but went underwater while he was trying to swim to shore.

University and Fairbanks Fire Departments responded to the scene and at approximately 9:45 a.m. Fairbanks Fire Department recovered Ravenscroft’s body.

Next of kin have been notified and his body will be sent to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy and toxicology screening.
