FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks Curling Club is hosting their 2022 Rookie Spiel. The event which has been active since 1987, pairs two rookies, one veteran, and another curler (rookie or veteran), giving those interested in joining the curling community an opportunity while playing with experienced curlers.

“For those of us that curl all the time, we love to show new curlers how to play the game, and give them the love we already have for it,” said Kate Morrison, Rookie Spiel Chairwoman. “It’s one of my favorite spiels because you get to watch the progress of someone who’s never really been out on the ice get better and better each game they play.”

The purpose of this event is more focused on teaching and growing the game of curling rather than a serious competitive environment. Rookies will be taught and get first-hand experience with the rules of the game, curling etiquette, and more subtle nuances.

“I would say just do it,” gave Morrison on advising someone that might be on the fence about participating. “Don’t be scared. We’re a great group of people. Nobody bites, and it’s just a great time!”

The cost of the event is $35 dollars for each curler. One can sign up individually or form a full, four-person team of their own. There will also be a “Learn to Curl” event for the rookies leading up to the spiel.

The only equipment needed will be athletic-fitting clothing, and a clean pair of tennis shoes. All curling equipment will be provided, and the curling club will also provide breakfast and lunch both days.

The 2022 Rookie Spiel will take place Saturday and Sunday November 26-27. This year’s theme is “Breakfast of Champions.” To gather more details, or sign up, visit Fairbanks Curling Club’s website at curlfairbanks.org.
