FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - An alert from the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FBSB) reports GCI customers in the borough are to use 907-459-6800 for emergency calls if 911 is not working. Please do not test the number. It will only delay those calls that are needed for a real emergency.

A GCI network outage has temporarily shut down service in numerous cities, according to the network and GCI customers in FNSB are not able to make calls at this time (Jan. 8).

In a Facebook post at 12:27 p.m. Sunday, GCI wrote that the service failure applies to “wireless voice, data, text, and internet service in multiple communities across the state.”

“Our team has identified the problem and our technicians are working as quickly as possible to fix this issue,” GCI wrote. “Restoring service is our top priority and we appreciate your patience. We apologize for this interruption and will be sure to keep you updated throughout the day as we work to resolve the issue.”

A pre-recorded message on the company’s customer service line says calls to technical support are not needed at the moment.
