FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - President Biden announced Mike Sfraga his intended nominee for the first Ambassador at Large for Arctic Affairs on Monday, February 13.

Sfraga currently serves as the Chair of the United States Arctic Research Commission. He earned a PhD in Geography and Northern Studies at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Senator Lisa Murkowski welcomed the announcement in a press release, calling his experience unmatched and saying she’ll work with her colleagues to confirm his nomination quickly.

The senator said, “This places the U.S. one step closer to having dedicated, high-level diplomatic representation in the Arctic.”
