FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Who can resist a fairy tale and to make it even more unique, a fairy tale performed by members of the North Star Ballet.

The North Star Ballet is gearing up for the presentation of “The Firebird” which will be held at the Salisbury Theatre this coming weekend, April 22 and 23.

“The Firebird” is an all ages, family friendly, fairy tale. From a prince, to a princess, to an evil sorcerer, and the titular “firebird” also known as a phoenix, the show will be nothing short of magical. Just like a fairy tail, love conquers all and peace and harmony rule this magical land.

Firebird, and other short works will be presented this weekend as part of the North Star Ballet’s 35th annual gala.

“We have six different ballets choreographed by our local choreographers. So it’s a really wide variety of styles,” explains Artistic Director, Courtland Weaver. The gala features the work of three guest artists who reside with the Milwaukee Ballet, the Austin Ballet, and the Anchorage Dance Theatre. Students from the North Star Ballet will also be on hand to support the main characters and also to perform for family and friends.

No barriers of language. No differences of philosophy. The gala is simply dance.

“People get to see all the way from contemporary to straight up classical ballet. We get to see both this wonder story of ballet with these sumptuous, magnificent sets and costumes, but also some pretty good contemporary ballet and contemporary dance,” said Weaver.

The gala will be held at the Salisbury Theatre located at 1718 Tanana Drive.

Saturday’s performance starts with a 2 p.m. matinee and an evening performance at 7:30 p.m. Sunday’s only performance is a 2 p.m. matinee.
