The start of the football season is here, and interior teams are getting ready and gearing up for another season of Alaskan high school football.

After a rough last few seasons for the Wolfpack, they are trying to come into a new season with a fresh mindset and new goals.

“You know, you come into each season feeling hopeful, but these guys have put in a lot of work this off-season. You know, they attended some camps, and just kind of you know definitely a really good vibe with this group of guys. You got a ton of young guys, and we really worked hard on building a positive culture and we’re ready to get after it,” said West Valley head football coach, David Devaughn.

For a team that will spend the first three weeks of the season on the road, focusing on the task at hand is needed. In the first three weeks alone, the team will spend over thirty two hours on the road and travel just under 2,000 miles. That amount of traveling can be hard on pro teams, let alone high school student athletes, and for the leaders of the Wolfpack, the plan is pretty simple.

“Just be locked in, be ready to go, and when we get back, we’ll be ready to play in our own stadium in front of our home fans. We’ll hopefully have a winning record by the time we get back to home games,” said Leyton Nield, who will be under center this season as the starting quarterback for the Wolf Pack this season.

With the team plan to be locked in and ready to go from before the opening kick off, even the players are feeling a different vibe from the aura the team is giving off.

“This is a tough team, we’re very hard working, I think it’s going to be a lot different than last year. We’re all focused and I think we’ll do great this season, this is a good team,” said Zaire Stebbins, a junior middle linebacker and leader on the defensive side of the ball.

The Wolfpack open their season against Wasilla Friday night at seven o’clock at Wasilla High School.
