FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - After 20 years, the east ramp of the Fairbanks International Airport runway is finally getting some much needed renovations.

During the 2023 construction season, the Dept. of Transportation (DOT) began resurfacing improvements to the east ramp apron and taxiway. “We are repaving the east ramp tie-down areas,” said Zak Mitchell, the public information officer for the Fairbanks Intl. Airport.

The asphalt underlying the tie-down area, which is “where individual aircraft owned by people in our community, park their vehicles,” has reached the end of its longevity. “It’s essential it gets redone, just because of its age,” said Mitchell.

The current repavement efforts will provide upgraded and up to date surface for the planes as the new tarmac is thicker.

The 52 acre project was highly coordinated as the airport and the pilots and the DOT worked together to figure out how to best manage the movement of vehicles. “That effort was made to prevent interruption in operation,” Mitchell said. “Most people have been properly relocated temporarily.” The project will continue the pattern of temporary adjustments until it is finished.

That end date is scheduled for the end of this construction season, but the project could remain unfinished until 2024.
