Percy Jackson Musical on the Fairbanks stage
FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Local fans of Greek mythology are in luck this week, as the curtain rises on “The Lightning Thief.”
The musical, produced by the Fairbanks Academy of Children’s Theatre, follows an adaptation of the popular ‘Percy Jackson’ children’s book series by author Rick Riordan. The leading character, Percy Jackson, discovers that his absent father is in fact the Greek God Poseidon, and the entire Greek pantheon is very much alive and kicking. Percy and his friends find themselves on a quest to recover Zeus’s stolen lightning bolt in order to prevent a celestial war.
The heroic crew confronts an array of myths and monsters along the path, such as a Fury and a Minotaur.
The actors say that the play has pushed them to form a community, and to hone in their acting skills.
“The singing, definitely,” emphasized Joey Rush, the actor playing Percy Jackson, “has been different than any other [play] I’ve done. It’s been a challenge but I think I’ve gotten to where it’s pretty good.”
“I think the message the play tries to give is, be yourself,” commented Tommy Tilbury, the actor playing Grover. “Your differences make you strong.”
“The Lightning Thief” is being performed on West Valley High School’s DeWild Theatre through the first weekend of November. For more information visit their website.
