FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Around 2:30 a.m. Monday morning, the Alaska State Troopers (AST) were notified of an attempted break in at a motel in Tok.

A trooper from Tok arrived to the scene and observed an adult male brandishing an AK47 type rifle outside the motel.

Due to the man’s actions, the trooper shot the adult male, according to a dispatch report. The individual, identified as 21-year-old Timothy Thomas of Northway, was declared dead at the scene.

While there were no injuries to officers or civilians the Alaska Bureau of Investigation (ABI) is conducting a thorough investigation of the shooting.

Thomas’ next of kin has been notified and the trooper who discharged their firearm has been placed on 72 hours of administrative leave in accordance with Dept. of Public Safety policy.

Once the ABI investigation is complete, the name of the officer will be released.
